Payment terms on an invoice. Clear terms get paid sooner.

Vague terms lead to late payments. Say exactly when the invoice is due, how to pay and what happens if it's late, then put the same date in the due date field.

How to add payment terms to an invoice

  1. Set the Issue date and the Due date. A new invoice is due 14 days after the issue date; change it to whatever you agreed with the client.
  2. In Payment terms, write the deadline in words that match the due date, how to pay you, and any late-payment terms. The default "Payment due within 14 days." is only a starting point.
  3. Check the preview. The due date sits in the header next to the invoice number, and your terms are printed at the bottom under "Terms".
  4. Download the PDF. Your terms are remembered on this device and kept when you click Start a new invoice.

Common payment terms and what they mean

TermMeaning
Due on receiptPay as soon as the invoice arrives. Set the due date to the issue date.
Net 7, Net 15, Net 30The full amount is due 7, 15 or 30 days after the invoice date. Net 30 is common between businesses.
EOMUsually "due at the end of the month the invoice was issued". Spell it out, because people read it differently.
2/10 Net 30The client may take 2% off if they pay within 10 days. Otherwise the full amount is due in 30 days.
50% upfrontHalf before the work starts and half on delivery. Send two invoices, one for each half.

Example wording

Before you add a late fee

Agree on late fees or interest up front, in your quote or contract, rather than surprising a client on the invoice. Limits on late fees and interest differ between countries and states, and some countries set a statutory interest rate for late payments between businesses. If you're unsure what you can charge, check your local rules or ask an accountant.

Invoice generator FAQ

What does Net 30 mean on an invoice?

The full amount is due within 30 days of the invoice date. Set the due date 30 days after the issue date so the date and the terms say the same thing.

Should payment terms be in the contract or on the invoice?

Both. Agree on them before the work starts, in your quote or contract, then repeat them on every invoice so the person paying sees them.

Where do the payment terms appear on the PDF?

At the bottom of the invoice under the heading "Terms", after any notes. The due date is shown separately in the header.

Is this invoice generator really free?

Yes. Create and download as many PDF invoices as you like, with no signup. Each PDF carries a small "Made with SiskinBill" line in the footer.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and your draft is stored only in this browser's local storage. Use "Start a new invoice" to clear it. The only things ever sent are cookie-free visit counts (Cloudflare Web Analytics, see Privacy), anonymous counts of which buttons are used (for example, 'a PDF was downloaded'), and an anonymous error report if something breaks (error text, browser, page, app version). Never anything you type or upload. Button counts are skipped if your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control.

How is tax calculated?

Tax is applied to the subtotal after the discount. Each line is rounded to the cent, and the tax is rounded once. Shipping is added after tax.

Can I add my logo?

Yes. Upload a PNG or JPG. It is resized in your browser and placed at the top of the PDF.

Which currencies are supported?

USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, NZD, CHF, JPY, INR and MXN. Where the PDF font has no symbol (for example the rupee sign), the currency code is used instead.

Is this tax or legal advice?

No. Check what your invoices must include where you do business (for example a VAT or GST number).
